Instructor Fatally Shot and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria

Violent incident at educational facility
Educational institutions in the northern part of Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for armed groups

Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The criminal group breached the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.

The armed individuals "engaged police personnel on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.

An educational worker was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.

Area inhabitants told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.

The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.

In the last several years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to seek ransom payments or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their children's secure homecoming.

Safety emergency in the northern regions of Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with schools experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
