On the eve of his half-decade plus one year in charge, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his longevity in North London is directly connected to achieving success.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

The Spanish coach was appointed on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory a short time later. But, that early success remains his sole major honor since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded in response to a query about remaining in charge after his current deal. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the coming months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

He will mark the landmark with a fixture against Everton, the exact opponent Arsenal met immediately following his role was made public.

The Current Landscape

Given that trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal could be displaced top spot in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This comes even with Arteta overseeing a squad that has been plagued by over 100 injuries since the start of last season.

The manager is under a contract with 18 months remaining on the extension he agreed to in 2024, yet understands fully that he must deliver in the immediate future.

Survival in the Job

Arteta elaborated, stressing the daily requirement to validate his position. “I think a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you address the media, how you enter the dressing room, the signal you send.”

He stated further, commending the strong backing from the club's ownership, while singling out the players' commitment as most crucial. “Ultimately, the critical component are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, hunger for knowledge and give their all to the team.”

Squad Setbacks

The squad approaches the Everton match dealing with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been declared unavailable with a muscle problem that is expected to sideline him for a few weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Even with the injury crisis and the high-stakes environment, Arteta is confident the club's “objectives and communication” are completely changed from when he first arrived.

The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Examine the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the caliber we've reached.”

In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And we want to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
