Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch activating and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
